Many times, coffee shops will also give away their coffee grounds for free. Those grounds are rich in nitrogen, making them an effective addition to any compost pile.

My First Time Roasting Coffee « The Daily Grind
While travelling here around Portland OR I decided to spend a few days in the Mt. hood area and hopefully try to summit the mountain. Today was pretty much rest and explore time so I drove down the mountain to nearby Rhododendron and check out Mt. Hood Roasters. I spent some time with the owners Rick and Jiyeon Applegate.
The Applegate’s were super friendly and accommodating. I just stopped in for a cup of coffee, but they both kind of took me in and took me on a tour of the company. they embody all the principles espoused in the book Free by Chris Anderson. they don’t hide anything and aren’t worried about people seeing how they operate. they run a fantastic business based on sound practices and quality product and don’t need the secrecy that most other businesses seem to require.
When I first arrived Rick wasn’t there so Jiyeon offered me a cup of coffee and told me all about the business while she packaged small bags of coffee for area gift shops. Rick didn’t show up for a bit so she called him and explained that he’s apt to start talking to people and just hang out a while at the post office or wherever. She told me a little bit about the actual roaster, but made it clear that Rick loves to talk about it and that she’d leave that part for him to do. She and I talked a little about coffee habits in Korea, where she is from.
Rick pulled up, and it was like meeting an old friend. Rick is an Army retiree and met Jiyeon while stationed in Korea. they settled in the Mt. Hood area because he has family nearby. their first venture was a full-fledged restaurant, but they settled into the coffee business because the restaurant demanded too much time. now they’ve set up Mt. Hood Roasters in what Rick envisioned as a winery-style operation. their house is right behind the roastery. they roast, package, and sell from the same building. they even have a small cottage onsite that is offered free of charge to any of their vendors that would like to stay near the mountain for some ski time or just a getaway. It really is similar to how many wineries operate to great success, and it obviously works for them as well.
Rick took me back to the supply shack where he stores his green coffee beans. after he explained all the reasoning behind his bean selections we picked a blend of green beans to roast. Then he took me back to the roasting room and we cooked up a ten pound batch in his Sivetz air roaster. Although I’ve been a coffee nut for a long time, this was my first experience with roasting it, and what an enjoyable time it was. at each step of the process Rick explained what was happening. We watched the chaff float away, smelled the beans at each point, listened for the crack of water followed by the crack of oil. Then we moved the beans over to a cooling kettle.
There are a lot of roasters out there, but every one I’ve run across acted like what they were doing was a corporate secret that only they knew about. the Applegate’s at Mt. Hood Roasters were just the opposite. they invited me in and revealed everything. They’re very proud of their operation and rightly so. If you are ever in the Mt. Hood area, you should consider this as one of your main tourist stops. It’s right on Hwy 26 before you get into Government Camp. Even if you don’t drink coffee it’s worth a stop. Maybe they’ll make a coffee drinker out of you.
If you’ve ever thought about starting a coffee business, I’d call the Applegate’s and offer to do an unpaid internship or just pay them to show you the ropes. It would be a great way to learn the business.

Our coffee is from a company out of Acton, Mass., called George Howell Coffee Company. All coffee is fair trade, direct trade, and organic certified.

Baristas want perfect cup of coffee
BOGOTA, June 4 (UPI) — you think you know coffee, but compared to the baristas at the 12th annual World Barista Championship in Bogota, you don’t know joe.
“This is not making a cup of joe,” said Rob Kettner, 35, part owner of the Fernwood Coffee co. in British Columbia. “It’s culinary coffee at its best; it’s real, true coffee; it’s the exploration of coffee and how far we can take it.”
Fifty-four of the world’s best baristas traveled to Bogota, Colombia, this weekend for the annual coffee fest and the holy grail comes Sunday, when one barista will win a Nuova Simonelli expresso machine and a trip to Brazil’s coffee growing region, the Washington Post reported Saturday.
American competitor Pete Licata, barista at the Honolulu Coffee co., picks his own beans from Hawaiian coffee bushes. He then processes and roasts them himself.
“With competitions, you practice making cappuccinos over and over again,” said Licata. “I would probably say I’ve made over a thousand drinks just in preparation for competition, you know.”

The Difference With Organic Beans for Coffee

There are many synthetic chemicals that are used in coffee that is not made from organic beans, which can be very harmful to anyone who decides to drink it; therefore, the coffee will not only taste better when it is organic, but it will also be detrimental to the body. When you drink a cup of organic coffee, you don’t have to worry about hazardous chemicals or hurting the environment because you will know that the coffee was cultivated in the most organic way possible.
Organic beans that are used for coffee are grown in certain conditions that allow them to reap the benefits of shade and a lack of exposure from the sun. It should be rather obvious as to why organic beans have many advantages over coffee beans grown in the more conventional way, but many people have not even heard of the idea of organics. Spraying crops with pesticides is a rather new phenomenon when you consider the full history of agriculture in the world, so the full effects of these chemicals on things that we eat are not fully known. many people like to wait to make sure something works before they go out and buy it, for example a new operating system for a computer, but with our food we seem content with spraying them with chemicals and not worrying about the possibility of this not turning out to be a good idea.

I'm now in the final years of my high school and for my art project i had to come up with a them, i chose FAIR TRADE COFFEE. In this theme i will have muffins and coffee and tea in a poster. Before the poster can even be started i must do a ''research sheet'' (a sheet with printed out information, logo's, cups of coffee from Internet printed out, some basic drawings of muffins, tea, etc) Then will go on to do a ''development sheet'' (where i take these basic ideas and develope them into more charismatic and eye catching things) Then, once all is finished i move on to my final poster. This poster will make up 50% of my exam so i have to make it look eye catching and different from others. Could anyone help me think of different/eye catching ideas that follow the theme ''fair trade coffee'' cakes, tea etc. I already have an idea of having loads of coffee beans as the background of my poster, is this a good idea? let me know. Thank so much to anyone who helps xxxxx
hmm fair trade coffee…. make a pun, like put a cup of coffee on one side of a scale and like gold on the other… or someone trading coffee for a goat or something, the goat could be eating muffins….
It sounds to me like an eye catching and interesting way! However here are some ideas:
How about spreading the coffee beans in an interesting way, maybe so that they cover some text or so that they form a picture or spell out something? Remember, try to distinguish your poster in such a way that it doesn't look like perhaps a coffee shop/brand poster. Make clear your message!
The tip with posters is think of what you're trying to do (i.e have coffee beans as a background) and then consider if that is the most interesting thing you can come up with. Think about different arrangements, colors, themes, representation, and whatever you do, don't limit your ideas! I really hope this helps, good luck!
Sounds cool! I'm only in 8th grade so I may be biting of more than I can chew here so feel free to ignore my advice. . . Mabye you could draw like a bag full of coffee beans that spilt all over your poster, then draw like coffee cups and muffins sort of buried in the beans (Kind of hard to explain, like sitting in the beans in a way as if they spilled out too). or if that isn't good mabye give it some abstraction, which keeps the viewer thinking and hopefully makes it eye catching.
Also one last thing, go to google images and type in fair trade coffee. Mabye that will give you some more ideas!

mine is Moka-Java, a blend of Ethiopian Moka and Indonesian Java that I get from Trader Joe's

I have finally graduated Dunkin Dounuts Coffee and started buying my own whole bean coffees and wanted to get an idea on some orgins of great Coffee and the charactoristics of these regions…Please give good brands to try as well…Thanks Coffee Conisuers…….
I read about how there are expensive coffee machines that basically grind the beans and brew the coffee one cup at a time. obviously this is a slow process and the operator of these machines must be trained properly. The customer seems to gladly wait for this special cup of coffee and is willing to pay 5 or 6 dollars for it. The result of this increasing demand for the perfect cup of coffee by the masses is that the source – the "ore" so to speak must also be almost perfect. This source of course is the Coffee Bean. every bean must be perfect and picked when properly ripe, must not have any blemishes or rotten places on them, because the individually brewed cups of coffee will reveal every flaw.
This need for perfect beans will further increase the cost of coffee brewed in this manner. so, there will be two tiers of coffee. good coffee , for the 7-dollar coffee-shop customers, and the "rejects" for everyone else. The awesome beans will not be mixed together with the half-ruined ones like they have been for centuries. The "average" coffee will actually be much worse than ever, because they will be made from the beans not worthy of the coffee houses.
